It can feel a little UNCOMFORTABLE AT FIRST but as you lay down onto the mat and your body relaxes into the spikes the initial pain should subside. When people get older their skin tends to become more sensitive and thinner, especially if you are on medications that may cause this to happen. So it is very important to be careful if you know this applies to you.

I would recommend that if you are trying an acupuncture mat for the first time and are concerned about this, then I would suggest that you try using it while wearing a thin cotton shirt or a cotton pillowcase over the mat’s spikes. This will reduce the pressure slightly and cover the pointy end of the spikes so they don’t push into the skin too much. Once you’ve tried this technique it should help you feel comfortable with the mat and that you are not going to hurt yourself.

After a session on an acupressure mat, your skin will have tiny little indents where the spikes pressure was applied. These will disappear over time but if you were planning on going out sleeveless straight afterwards then your skin will have a speckled indented effect a bit like an orange peel. These images show my skin straight after I finished a 20-minute mat session, 15 minutes later and then finally 40 minutes after the session ended. As you can see the indents slowly disappear. It took about an hour and a warm shower before the indentations had fully disappeared. The time it takes for the indents to disappear may vary per person, depending on how supple or dry your skin is as well.

The Acupressure mat works by using your body weight and gravity so that when you lay or stand on the mat’s spikes the pressure or your weight and gravity push you into the mat’s acupressure spikes.

The science behind it suggests that these mats may stimulate your brain to release endorphins, which are helpful in elevating your mood and also in relieving symptoms of pain.

The pressure of the mat’s spikes into the muscles encourage increased circulation and helps to relax the body.

By using the mat’s friction of the spikes pushing into your areas of tension (knotted or restricted muscles) should encourage the muscles to become more relaxed and release their tension.       An acupressure mat can feel uncomfortable at first until you get used to them. I have found the tenser I am the more it hurts getting onto the mat initially, but I have found as my blood circulation increases it changes and becomes a warm sensation as the muscles relax. I always get into a comfortable position slowly and don’t wriggle around on the mat. I did read a comment once about someone who cut their finger on the mat while opening the packaging, but when you lay on the mat you weight is evenly distributed and it’s not all on one spot.

      I have actually fallen asleep at times on the acupressure mat. I would suggest that if you are purchasing a mat and you are concerned at all about the spikes on your skin you can lessen the intensity of the spike pressure on the skin by wearing a cotton T-shirt or placing a cotton pillowslip over the mat before laying on it.

      Unfortunately, there isn’t any official study showing the effectiveness of acupressure mats. Everyone responds differently to different treatments so this may not be right for everyone. I can only tell you about my personal experience with acupressure mat.

      If you have any existing health conditions or are taking any medications you should always consult your medical professional before you try the acupressure mat.

      This would definitely NOT BE RECOMMENDED if you have any skin wounds or blood health issues, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a heart condition, blood pressure problems or are taking other blood medications.

    I had never heard about acupuncture mats.  The only bed of nails, a real one, that I have seen was at a place where students could come to do different experiments, among which one was to lay down on the bed of nails.

    I now about acupuncture, but never thought about it in this way.  It is really interesting to read about these mats.  I think they must be extremely relaxing and comfortable, although you need to get used to them.

    I have a permanent spasm in my left shoulder blade.  It’s been there for nearly 3 years and nothing seems to work.  Most of the time it is not too bad, but some days I have this burning sensation that goes to my neck and arm.  Do you think the acupreassure mat  might help for this?

      First of all, thank you for reading my post. I want to tell you that yesterday I had terrible pain in my neck and shoulder and I could not work. The pain then went into the side of my head and caused me distress and I felt a pre-migraine sensation in my eyes and side of my head. I took my mat and put it on the floor. I set the timer for 15 mins and rested on the acupressure mat. Well, after the 15 mins, the pain had gone, the circulation had increased around my neck and shoulder area as it felt warm and relaxed. So, in my opinion, this mat could help you with pain management not just for migraines but other areas of tension and pain if you need. It’s a gift received from a friend and I love as it helps me continue in my daily life and manage my pain and discomforts. If you are at all concerned on the cause of your burning sensation then I suggest that you go and see your medical professional and get them to check for the cause of the discomfort. But if you are doing a lot of computer work it could be related to the sitting and repetitive small movements we do when working at our desks.
